Marshall Chin, MD, MPH, Co-Director of the Bridging the Gap National Program Office, is the Richard Parrillo Family Professor of Healthcare Ethics in the Department of Medicine and the Director of the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research at the University of Chicago. Dr. Chin is a practicing general internist and international expert in improving diabetes care for vulnerable patients and reducing racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. Together with Monica Peek, MD, MPH, he leads “Improving Diabetes Care and Outcomes on the South Side of Chicago”, a multi-faceted initiative that incorporates culturally tailored patient education and empowerment, provider training in communication and behavioral change, a quality improvement collaborative with six clinics, and community partnerships.

Dr. Chin performed many of the key studies informing how to improve diabetes care and outcomes in federally-qualified health centers serving vulnerable populations with limited resources. He analyzed clinical, economic, and organizational outcomes, influencing the implementation of national initiatives and policies to improve chronic care management in health centers. His work over the past decade leading the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Finding Answers: Solving Disparities Through Payment and Delivery System Reform Program led to the creation of the Roadmap to Reduce Disparities, cited in the National Academy of Medicine’s report System Practices for the Care of Socially At-Risk Populations and The CMS Equity Plan for Improving Quality in Medicare. Dr. Chin co-chairs the National Quality Forum (NQF) Disparities Standing Committee that recommended how to achieve health equity through performance measurement and payment reform to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) via its report A Roadmap for Promoting Health Equity and Eliminating Disparities: The 4 I’s for Health Equity.

Dr. Chin serves on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Community Preventive Services Task Force and the National Advisory Council to the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. He is a former President of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and has won mentoring awards from SGIM and the University of Chicago. Dr. Chin is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, and he completed residency and fellowship training in general internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chin was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2017.
